Colombian reception of the colonial intertext in the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez : retrospective for a new conquest of oneself

The publication’s success of Cien años de soledad in 1967, made Gabriel Garcia Marquez one of the most read and commented upon Latin-American writers of the sub-continent. This privileged position was reinforced in 1982 with the award of the Litterature Nobel Prize and in 2014, the year of the writer’s death. Those circumstances have allowed to gauge the extent of a reception which agrees to view the author as the « emblem » of a whole continent and the « spokesman » of a population which enjoyed to be represented in the wonderful and excess of his writings. To a new reader, the Marquezian work is interpreted even before being read : it is preceded by an important critical device which leads to the conditioning of its intrepretation and evaluation. The central issue here is that these different readings give an undeniable historical value to a work that yet maintains contradictory and ambiguous relationships with official sources. It will be by analysing the whole of the Marquezian corpus in the light of an intertext considered as the whole basis of Latin-American history – the Chronicles of the Indies – that it will be possible to determine if Garcia Marquez stands as a heir of a past occidental vision or if, on the contrary, he will become a promoter of a « new » history, which has been praised over and over by critics since 1967.
