Résumé

We investigate high-speed confined granular flows down smooth inclines by means of discrete element method simulations. We bring to light new flow regimes with heteregenous packing fraction and complex secondary flows including flows with convection rolls, supported flows and an oscillating regime. Among them, the supported flow regime is particularly interesting. It consists in a dense granular core floating on a dilute and agitated granular layer as an air cushion and may be a good candidate for explaining long run-out avalanches. Numerical simulations revealed that the mean flow velocity VL obeys a simple scaling law as a function of the particle hold-up H and the gap width W between the two side-walls: VL ∝ H0.3W0.7. We found that the effective friction μ at the walls can be described as a unique function of a Froude number Fr = VS/ p P/ρ built from the sliding velocity Vs, the normal pressure P at the wall and ρ the material particle density. The wall friction law μ(Fr) was shown to hold both at the local and global scale and for steady and unsteady flows. We highlighted a similar law for the packing fraction ϕ at the walls which is a unique function of the Froude number ϕ(Fr). These relations μ(Fr) and ϕ(Fr) provide a relevant set of boundary conditions to predict the slip velocity at the boundary given the flow configuration. We also studied the role of the channel width on flow features. The main effect of the channel width is to change the domain of existence of the different flow regimes in the parameter space (H, θ), where θ is the inclination angle of the flow. A decrease in W shifted flow regimes towards higher angles of inclination. The friction law μ(Fr) and ϕ(Fr) remain unchanged when the channel width W was varied. Finally, we investigated the role of mechanical parameters e, μgw and μgg, respectively the restitution coefficient between grains, the friction coefficient between the grains and the wall, and the friction coefficient between grains). We found that e and μgw have a monotonic effect on the mean flow velocity. Increasing e or μgw reduced the flow velocity. However, for μgg, we observed a cross-over regime characterized by a critical angle. Below it, the mean flow velocity decreased with increasing μgg, while above it increased. Finally, μ(Fr) and ϕ(Fr) retained similar qualitative forms while quantitatively varying with μgw and μgg and being invariant with e.
