Abstract : Smart devices and applications (SDApps) are increasingly present in everyday life to influence health behaviors frequently linked to nutrition (diet and physical activity). Although knowledge of SDApps’ practices is becoming clearer, their conditions for the effectiveness on behavior changes remain poorly explored. The aim of this research is to identify components and effective mechanisms to take into consideration in the design of an SDApp supporting behavioral change, taking into account social health inequalities (SHI) and viability conditions for their use. These elements will provide professionals who use or design them with a tool to analyze their effectiveness. To achieve this, we implemented a structured participatory approach to build consensus between practitioners and users based on the following references: recommendations of the Medical Research Council (MRC), the Theory of Change (ToC) and S. Michie's approach to behavioral changes with the “Behavior Change Techniques” (BCTs) and the “Behavior Change Wheel”. We developed an analysis framework that includes the following: - An intervention theory formalized in a grid to analyze nutrition SDApps called the "Behavior change Grid". - A list of criteria to analyze SHIs criteria in SDApps compiled in an analysis grid called the "Inequity grid". - A list of criteria to analyze the viability of SDApps compiled in an analysis grid called the "Viability Grid". The generated model with the 3 grids is additional to the Health Technology Assessment approaches. It can be adjusted to the objectives and available resources. It can be used to design new SDApps as well as to analyze existing SDApps. It can be adapted in a simplified grid to guide users in choosing a SDApps corresponding to their needs. Its practicability has yet to be tested in different uses.
