This special issue deals with the different main task which composes the CAD system, segmentation, image content description and classification to quantifying and identifying pathologies. It came out after the international conference on Image Processing Theory, Tools and Applications (IPTA 2014), which was conjointly co-sponsored by the IEEE French Section and EURASIP and held at Paris, on October 14–17, 2014. Some selected original research papers were encouraged by the IPTA 2014 TPC to extend their works and participate in this special issue
