Résumé

This session will present the preliminary findings of the Horse Commission Working Group which was set up at the EAAP Conference in Crete in 2010. In an acknowledgment of the emerging and diverse roles of equines within society – both rural and urban areas–there is a need to develop a better understanding of the range and nature of the different equine related programmes being provided across Europe. The Working Group is comprised of researchers and/or practioners from Italy, France, Austria and Ireland. The initial focus of the working group has been to define and measure the range and growth of equine assisted activities which includes therapeutic riding, riding for people with disabilities, hippotherapy, vaulting, carriage driving and equine assisted learning/ coaching/ equine assisted psychotherapy. The presentation will also include an overview of the skills set of personnel involved in the programmes together with any evaluation and research that has been conducted. Data collected from over 36 countries will be presented together with an overview of the next stages of work to be undertaken.
