Influence de la lumière et de l'obscurité sur l'induction au vol et sa cessation chez le Criquet pélerin Schistocerca Gregaria (Forskål) élevé en isolement ou en groupes denses

Abstract : Male Schistocerca gregaria reared either in dense groups or in isolation for a variable number of generations are tested on individual roundabouts moving only by wing beats, in separate isolated enclosures. Locusts are tested with sequences of alternating light or darkness (natural or artifical light). Change from one sequence to another is progressive (about 3 min). Under these conditions if a locust is not flying when the light comes on progressively, it may show a brief flying, activity. On the other hand, if a locust is flying, it will stop quicker and for longer the feebler its' flight tendency and the more intense the light. Fundamentally light tends to inhibit flight in Schistocerca gregaria. On the contrary, flying activity in darkness begins all the later the stronger the preceding light and the feebler the flight tendency; light inhibits flight remanently. Any change in the lighting can be followed by flight for a given flight tendency. This activity develops freely in darkness, but the stronger the light, the less it develops. The effect of light on locusts flying activity depends, for a given intensity, only on their flight tendency both for those reared in dense groups and those reared in isolation. Remanent inhibition phenomena may help understand night flight take-off behaviour of dispersed populations of Schistocerca gregaria taking place a certain time after darkness has set in.
