Étude Au Laboratoire Du Développement Possible De L'Activité Migratrice Chez Le Criquet Pélerin, Schistocerca Gregaria, Lors Des Invasions Et Des Récessions

Abstract : Change from periods of swarming to periods of recession in the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) was stimulated by varying the density of succeeding generations: (namely by group rearing followed by rearing in isolation for between one and three generations, then group rearing again for several succeeding generations). Flight behaviour levels of isolated generations were considerably lower than those of control generations (permanently group reared). The level of flight behaviour of generations, regrouped after prior isolation, rose between the first and the second or third generation following regrouping, and for several generations exceeded the level for controls. There was a subsequent diminution of the level of flight behaviour of regrouped generations, tending towards levels of controls. The initial increase in level of flight behaviour after regrouping was rapid relative to the subsequent diminution. The results are discussed in relation to ecological factors.
