Abstract Mapping of vegetation using remote sensing: results of feasibility study on northwest of France The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of aerial and satellite imagery of high spatial resolution for large scale vegetation mapping on Brittany, Normandy and Pays de la Loire regions. To that end, diff erent types of remote sensing images were acquired: aerial photographies (BDORTHO® IRC) and satellite images (SPOT5, World-view-2). To our knowledge, there is no study that use Worldview-2 images for large scale vegetation mapping while the eight spectral bands of this satellite sensor seems to be interesting to discriminate vegetation communities. Images are used on four sites which represent vegetation diversity in the NorthWest of France. Classifi cation processes were established on three of these sites and their repro-ducibility was assessed on the fourth site (Havre de Saint-Germain sur Ay et landes de Lessay, Manche), the most largest of them with high vegetation diversity. The classifi cation scheme used is the vegetation typology of the National Botanical Conservatory of Brest (CBN), which is a nested classifi cation system with eight levels of vegetation that schedules a phytosociological typology and a phy-siognomical typology. The phytosociological typology is based on Braun-Blanquet approach and used BIORET, BOUZILLÉ, CLÉ-MENT, HAURY and TOUFFET works and Prodrome des végétations de France that gather syntaxa list identifi ed in France. This nested classifi cation scheme is compatible with a remote sensed data set. Data preprocessing are performed on images. It consists for satellite images on pan-sharpening to improve spatial resolution of multis-pectral bands, atmospheric and geometric corrections and conversion from WGS-84 projection system into the French standard Lam-bert RGF-93 projection. Ortho-images on 1 square kilometer are merged into an imagery of approximately 50 square kilometers. An object-oriented classifi cation was applied on the dataset (BDO-RTHO® IRC, SPOT5), and was combined with a pixel-based classification when applied on the Worldview-2 image to take advantage of informations contained in the eight spectral bands of the image. Ancillary data were used to perform automatic classifi cation of natural vegetation. These data are extracted from national databases of French territory: roads, buildings, plantations, intertidal areas, water bodies and rivers, cadastral boundaries, geology (sand), wetlands. All these ancillary data are available on French territory. The use of these data scale is from 1/25 000 to 1/100 000. Vegetation mapping were cross-validated with fi eld plots to assess their accuracy. Field plots were produced on each site with GPS from april to september (2009 to 2012). The evaluation of results were based on the Kap-pa-index calculated at three classifi cation levels, that is Land cover, Large vegetation types, and Plant formation types levels. The best results were obtained at Land cover with the Worldview-2 image (K=0.88), then BDORTHO® IRC (K=0.81) and SPOT5 images (K=0.63). Same results are observed at Large vegetation types (Worldview-2: K=0.82; BDORTHO® IRC: K=0.77; SPOT5: K=0.64). Lower results are obtained for Plant formation types level (Kappa-index < 0.76 for all images) but some vegetation types could be improved in adding photo-interpretation in post-processing, in using multi-date images from diff erent sensors to discriminate temporary from permanent grasslands, using GIS data with a resolution similar to the aim (1/25 000) and using LiDAR data to detect vegetation heights.
