Truncated Leaky-Wave Antenna With Cosecant-Squared Radiation Pattern
Abstract
We propose here a mechanically simple leaky-wave antenna generating a cosecant-squared radiation pattern. The antenna topology is a superstrate configuration made by a truncated dielectric layer over a ground plane and fed by a single open-ended horn on the ground plane. The truncation of the dielectric layer and the size of the feed are engineered to excite a one-sided leaky-wave mode traveling along the superstrate and generating a cosecant-squared radiation pattern. The design of a structure operating at 10 GHz is then proposed. The structure presents a radiation pattern with its main beam pointing at theta = -23 degrees in elevation with a cosecant-squared shape within an angular range of about 70 degrees. The proposed design is validated by measurements at the X-band.
