Ferromagnetic ordering in the novel ternary uranium germanide URu0.29Ge2

Abstract

URu0.29Ge2 is a new germanide crystallizing in a monoclinic structure (C2/c space group, lattice parameters a = 4.098(1) angstrom, b = 15.936(3) angstrom, c = 4.045(1) angstrom and beta = 90.091(2)degrees) derived from the CeNiSi2-type. It undergoes a ferromagnetic ordering at T-c = 63 K, which manifests itself as distinct anomalies in temperature variations of the magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity. Just below T-c the T-dependent resistivity exhibits a broad hump, which hints at complex magnetic structure of the compound, while below 5 K it shows an upturn that likely arises due to atomic disorder in the crystal lattice.
