La « production baguettaire » au Gravettien. Étude de cas et discussions à partir de l’industrie en bois de cervidé de Laugerie-Haute (Dordogne, France)

Abstract : By comparing the archaeological data from Laugerie-Haute (Dordogne) with new experimental data, we propose here to discuss Gravettian antler rod production during the late phase (24,5-22,5 ka BP), mainly in France, but also in some other European contexts (27.5-20 ka BP). Very specific skills using various fracturing techniques were developed by diverse groups in France, Moravia and Romania, to produce rod-shaped blanks. These may reflect cultural traditions extending way beyond a regional framework. Indeed, the implementation – in different places and periods of the Gravettian sensu lato – of closely related, but nevertheless specific technical solutions raises questions as to the historical trajectories and the societal dynamics at work at that time. In this way, new connections can be identified between different regions of Europe. The ambition underlying our research is to characterise these practices and to try to understand their socio-economical significance. Given the complexity of these questions, they can only be evaluated over a long time scale. This article will also discuss some methodological and semantic problems raised by the characterisation of rod production during the Gravettian. Indeed, various procedures and methods, involving different percussion techniques, were used at this period: mainly indirect percussion but also sometimes combined with or replaced by diffuse or cutting percussion.
