« Pour être utile à la science ». Denis Peyrony et l'art préhistorique, de la découverte à la protection

Abstract : Denis Peyrony and prehistoric art from discoveries to protection. Born on April 21st, 1869, in Cussac, on the current town of Buisson Cadouin, Denis Peyrony is well known to prehistorians, its name being associated with the prehistory of the Vézère Valley. Digger of many paleolithic sites in Les Eyzies region, many of which are now considered as reference sites, he was also an important promoter of the importance of this heritage. Founder and first director of the Museum of Prehistory of Les Eyzies, he also was the one who opened prehistoric caves to the public, with a aim of developing regional tourism. In this article, we wish to present an important aspect of D. Peyrony's work: his relation to prehistoric art. We will of course deal with caves, especially Font-de-Gaume and Les Combarelles, but also with his relation to portable art, which he presents in several rooms of the museum he designs. With the help of archives, we will wander on his role in the discoveries as well as in the scientific problematization of the area, for which he is stayed largely behind the shadow of the Abbé H. Breuil. We will also come back on his stance on the preservation of sites, particularly bold for his time.
